The title was appropriate for the story. The main character was able to lead a perfect existence. However, everything was an illusion because it was built on lies and deception.

At first, I didn't really relate the book title to the story. However, reading other people's comments. I now definitely see how fitting this title is for the book. Vanessa's life was nothing but deception, pretending to be a different woman, the lies, the betrayals. And I agree that overall it describes the social tensions of the time, the calm on the surface trying to hide the turmoil of violence, racial discrimination and abuse.

I don't see anything misleading on the book's title. The title blends with the book's cover photo, and I appreciate that with the story.

I was wondering this same thing! I wouldn't have initially considered it an apt title, but after thinking about it more deeply, I think it reflects the underlying tensions that brew in the novel while things on the surface level remain placid.

I think it was an appropriate title for the book, as on the surface things seemed to be going just fine, but it was just a matter of time before everything came tumbling down for Vanessa.

The book 's title sounds like a paradox. I got to understand it more halfway through the book

I think the title was fairly fitting. I understand the purpose behind it. How Vanessa changed her identity and felt like no one would ever know, so that's why she was in a state of deception.

The title adjusts very well to the story. All goes quiet for a while until it blows up.

To be quite honest it does not reflect what actually happened in the book. The book had themes of racial discrimination, love and betrayal. I would say I don't think the title reflects what went on I this book.

I feel Deceptive Calm was a very appropriate title for this book. Vanessa thought she had gotten away with her deception, little did she know all the misery that would be in store for her.

Unlike other readers I think a more fitting title for this book would simply be ‘Deception.” I did not have a feeling of calm or peace reading this book and did not see the prejudice and racial tension as under the surface; Most of it was overt and “in your face.” The book started with a brutal attack by the Ku Klux Klan on a bus filled with black and white children from a Catholic school. The vitriolic comments of the Klansmen denigrated black students and all of the Catholic students by referring to them as “fish eaters.” There was no sustained sense of calm. Any underlying tension quickly exploded into arguments and/or slurs and insults.
