The Virtuous Physician: A Brief Medical History of Moral Inquiry from Hippocrates to COVID-19
by Elliott B. Martin, Jr. is a nonfiction book in which moral inquiry is viewed through a lens of medical history. Precepts describe the ideal way of being a physician and a pragmatic, very modern code of ethics. Great Read for the medical minds.

The evolution of medical ethics from the ancient Greeks to the present day demonstrates a dramatic departure from Hippocratic precepts, including "do no harm," to sophisticated norms that take into account intricate moral dilemmas in contemporary medicine. Modern ethics place more emphasis on patients' rights, social fairness, and the difficulties brought on by scientific and technological breakthroughs than ancient ethics did on the personal virtue of the doctor. This development shows a greater awareness of and care for the various facets of medical practice and how it affects people as well as society.
This book is a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on medical ethics and medical history. On the other hands, the author has provided an amazing description of theories and how they are used in real life. Also the book exhibits a great deal of information, although it is somewhat less understandable due to the many layers of abstraction and the usage of scholarly terminology.

I would have never thought about reading a book on the medical practice from the past and the present; however, "The Virtuous Physician" would attract any reader interested in medicine history and medical ethics--I would be one of those readers willing to embark on this "new" literature journey.

Really liked the book's take on what it means to be a physician, as well as its message amidst a once-perilous pandemic era. Not everyone would enjoy the academic essay-like style and tone, however, but it's still a gem nonetheless.

Thank you for your informative review. Although this book offers valuable insights on medical ethics and historical development of medicine, it is indeed quite complex and less understandable. good to know. I guess I'm not the target audience for this book.

The review is informative, stating both positive and negative aspects. It seems like a comprehensive account with a vast amount of data on medical history; the subject is a bit scholarly in nature for my liking.

With the medical profession always under scrutiny, a written compilation of past and present issues affecting the medical practice may shed some light on what it was meant to be and what it has evolved into. I'm interested in the development of medical ethics from the ancient Greeks up to the present. I hope the technical terminologies are understandable, with perhaps a bit of additional research. The author's account of theories and their real-life application sound fascinating. Thank you for your informative review.

Latest Review: The Virtuous Physician by Elliott B. Martin, Jr.

I agree with your review, absolutely. Personally, I have read this book, and would say that Martin, Jr did a great job in trying to trace the origin and history of medicine and the medical profession.

For the lay man, this book unravels how modern medicine and medical practices metamorphosed from what could be described as 'supernatural healings'. The Precepts, now used as a standard for modern-day medical practice, is an attempt to sieve out the metaphysical and make the medical professional more natural and scientific.

This book offers a written compilation of past and present issues affecting medical practice. It shows the development of medical ethics from the ancient Greeks to the present. It is based on solid research and an academic point of view. Although it may be difficult for the average reader to understand, it is still interesting.
