This review is a bit complex to me, I guess because the book itself is complex. Thank you for breaking it down as much as you could. I'm glad the author added commentaries to help one understand the content of the book.

I'm a person who loves to learn. But the will of learning is not enough. As the review mentioned, the book is written in a manner that might be hard to comprehend for general people. Given that I have no background and knowledge regarding medicine, I doubt I'll be the right person who can truly grasp the invaluable information put into this book. I'm sure a person in the medicine field will find this book irreplaceable.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of medical ethics, tracing its evolution from ancient Greek traditions to contemporary issues like COVID-19. Martin’s scholarly approach and meticulous commentary highlight the cultural and historical significance of the ‘virtuous physician,’ making it a valuable resource for academics and professionals in the medical field. Nice review.

I would love to read a book that shows the development of medical ethics from the ancient Greeks up to the present. Also the fact that the author brings even greater value to the mix by including a historically accurate narrative to the overall would make me want to read the book. Sounds to be very interesting.

This is an intriguing look at medicine through two lenses: Western and Eastern medicine. The book goes on a scientific quest to reach researched based conclusions that are practical in our everyday life.

What a wonderful review! It provides a thorough and balanced critique of The Virtuous Physician: The Work A Brief Medical History of Moral Inquiry from Hippocrates to COVID-19 by Elliott B. Martin, Jr. It's truly amazing how you effectively highlights the book's strengths, such as its detailed translation, insightful commentary, and robust research grounded in linguistic and historical scholarship while also acknowledging the book's unique contribution to the field of medical ethics, particularly its exploration of the intersection between Western and Eastern cultural perspectives. Furthermore, also include areas where the book may fall short for a broader audience.

Overall, it is well constructed and provides balancing admiration for the book's intellectual depth with constructive criticism about its accessibility

“The Virtuous Physician: A Brief Medical History of Moral Inquiry from Hippocrates to COVID-19” by Eliott B. Martin, traces the beginning and development of practical moral inquiry. The book is a translation of the 2nd Century BC Hippocratic Greek text, Precepts, a work that has not been translated into English since 1921 and the last translation introduced the concepts of the ‘Virtuous Physician’ and the ‘Art’ of medicine. Precepts details the ideal way to be a physician and a modern code of ethics. Physicians were very important in ancient society. The new, updated translation of Precepts is popular with classicists; and explains the influences between East and West in the Ancient World, especially Greek and Roman. Precepts is an excellent reference for daily decision-making. Some see it as a more valuable guide than the Hippocratic Oath. Readers will see another side of the medical profession. I will look for it at my local library since it is only available as a hardcover book.

The author did a commendable job of translating the original text, which talks about the ethics of a physician. Readers get to learn the history of medicine from the Greeks to the present covid and of eastern and western medicine.

It's nice to know about the history of medicine. The author discusses Thucydides' description of the plague. His narrative sticks to the actual text, and the translation is true to the original, which is praiseworthy. Although the complex medical terminology here and there can be difficult for the layman to understand, it encompasses valuable information. It's interesting to learn about ethics in regards to the physician.
