To have a special needs child is challenging for the parents. But not only does people around them not understand the approach is different, but some people are really not interested. I, on the other hand love these kids as to me, a person learn so much from them, they truly are amazing. Thanks for a great review. Congrats on BOTD.

I love how the reviewer defined the family as not normal because they are, indeed, exceptional based from the review alone. I love how it shows a change in the retrospect of student and teacher based from the situations life give us.

This review presents Unexpected Lessons from Professor Higgins as a heartfelt and inspiring story about a mother’s journey of love, acceptance, and growth while raising a child with Down syndrome. Patti Smith’s storytelling appears to be both reflective and uplifting, highlighting important themes such as patience, self-discovery, and breaking societal expectations. The book’s focus on Chris’s impact on his family and their evolving perspective on life seems truly touching.

:) Chris, with his diagnosis, challenged society's ideas about the value of a person and what it means to live a fulfilling life.

Thank you for your great review. I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I also liked her style of writing and the lessons I read in the sample. I have worked with mentally and physically challenged people years ago when they were "named" other names. They are each individual and have some sweet and quirky personalities. It's on my list of books to read.

I think it's great of Patti Smith to share her story with the world, as this will help families in similar situations dealing with Down syndrome. Unfortunately, I don't read nonfiction, so I'll be skipping this one.

Patti Smith's narration of her experience raising her son, affectionately known as Professor Higgins, is charming and thoughtful. The diagnosis of a child with Down Syndrome can be shocking to handle, but Patti and her family embraced the opportunity to learn with and from Chris with open arms. His life is a gift, and Patti's book is a reminder to see everyone that way. This reviewer is correct, the author's point of view that her child is also her teacher is a lovely way to structure the book. The lessons she learns are ones that we can all benefit from.

This book is a great opportunity to learn a little more about the life of a mother who finds out she has a child with this condition. The doctor comments in a very vivid way what the protagonist had to live through from the moment her son was born and it is an evolution to share with other people the feeling of a mother and how to cope with empathy and a lot of love with this type of cases that really are also a blessing.

This review is so moving and beautifully captures the essence of "Unexpected Lessons from Professor Higgins!" I completely agree that Patti Smith’s story is both inspiring and deeply touching. Her honesty and vulnerability are incredible, and I feel like her journey is something that can resonate with many people, not just parents of children with special needs. The fact that she sees her son as her teacher and a source of wisdom, and not the other way around, is also very powerful.

I completely relate to how Patti first processes her own thoughts and emotions on her son's Down syndrome diagnosis, before communicating this to her family.
This helps position her from a place of strength.

At the same time, we the readers, are fully aware of every emotional struggle she goes through, right up to the moment of acceptance that follows.
