Review of A Sailor, A Girl and a War-The Indianapolis
A Sailor, A Girl, and a War-The Indianapolis by Leo Stonewall Jackson Chilson is a romance novel that follows a sailor on his journey to survival as he remembers the woman waiting for him to return from war.
Walter and Jodie have a passionate relationship. After meeting in the cinema and realizing how much they like each other, Walter finds himself captivated by Jodie. But there is a war, and he is expected to embark on The Indianapolis and return to the sea. Jodie is as captivated by Walter, but afraid of what might happen once he goes back to The Indianapolis; she is uncertain if what they have is more than just a moment of passion. What will happen between Walter and Jodie? What is waiting for Walter at war?
One of the first things the reader will find is a glossary of the historical slang used in the book, something I appreciated as I was not familiar with those words. The author’s writing style is simple and easy to read. The book is divided between the romance between Walter and Jodie and his journey at sea.
The book has a slow flow; I struggled with maintaining my attention. The period is also confusing, as the story is supposed to be set in the 1940s, but the dialog and the interaction between the main characters seem inaccurate, more modern than they are supposed to be. The author also makes some changes in the spelling on one of the character’s names, switching from Jodi to Jodie.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. The book needs another round of editing, as I found more than ten errors, and some were so simple, any editor should have noticed them (for example, one sentence said “he” instead of “be”), as well as some punctuation mistakes.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy romance novels. While the book mentions World War II and some historical events, this is not historical fiction. This book is also suitable only for mature readers due to the sexual content.
