Not really sure what to think about this book, because while on the one hand it sounds like quite serious work related to important subjects like slavery and the implications it has on so many from different angles, at the same time I feel that adding a fantasy element by involving merpeople negates the effect of seriousness. Still undecided if I should read it, but congrats on BOTD!

Great review! "The Foundlings and Fisherman from Tumby" is authored by Phillip Leighton-Daly. This story is set in a time when human beings were used as slaves and treated like animals. Jon and Margaret stand up against this and pay the price for it by losing their people and their land. Right from the beginning, this book keeps the readers hooked with its interesting narrative. Congratulations on being declared 'BOTD'!

In 1863, Confederate Captain William Quantrill and his 400 horsemen torched Kansas town of Lawrence. Over 160 men, women and children were butchered. Quantrill did not care if a lot of people got hurt as long as he was making money from anti-slavery protests. Jon is an anti-slave sympatizer. Charles was a formidable seaman and well respected by his peers. One day, when boarding the Morning Mist, he and his wife met Charles.

The story is truly captivating. I have read the first pages of the Amazon sample of the book, and I am impressed. In an era where slavery was still common and legal and being an anti-slave sympathizer was risky and even deadly, Jon and Margaret and the rest stand out. I cannot wait to read the rest of the book.
Many thanks for this captivating review, @Huini Hellen.

"The Foundlings and Fisherman from Tumby" by Phillip Leighton-Daly is a great read. Jon and Margaret choosing to be anti slavery voices was very sacrificial.

Based off of the review this seems like a captivating historical fiction novel. I'm curious if this book gives more context to the authors other novel 'the Fisherman and his Foundlings'. Overall, I hope to read this book soon.

Your mention of the survival techniques used by Jon and his fellow passengers also makes me wonder what specific historical research has informed this story, and if this is based on real accounts. While I found that inclusion of merchild interesting
