This book got my curiosity and eagerness to read it because it happened in WWII. I want to know how Vanessa surpass all the obstacle in her life. How she face gender bias and racism for black community. I want to know what happened to her first love. I love romance fiction book.

Deceptive Calm is a captivating story that explores racial tension, gender bias, and the consequences of abusive marriages. It is recommended for readers who like romance fiction that fosters thought about deeper societal norms. This book is on my reading list.

The book highlights the issues of racism, gender bias and abuse in marriages while focusing on themes of love, friendship and family. These themes were discussed in the review and the type of readers the book would be suitable for was suggested. I think this was a balanced review and I also think a 5 out of 5 is a justified rating of the book.

This review clearly highlights not only the horror and injustice of racial discrimination in the USA but also gender bias, the evils of abuse by marriage partners and how unsafe society was in the 1950’s.75 years on and when one reads this book it is unbelievable how Black people were treated and the cruel role of the Ku Klux Klan - an organisation that had so much power in all aspects of American society. Deceptive Calm is a harsh reminder of this nightmare and that it should never be allowed to flourish ever again

At the time when this novel was written, racial discrimination abounded. Having the appearance of a white person but actually being Black, made life even more difficult for Vanessa, not fitting in anywhere. I loved sister Rosalie's character and the insight she provided into US history. She gave up her dreams to take care of Vanessa and other Black children. Vanessa and Trisha's friendship is admirable and a highlight in this story. The author covers not only racial discrimination but also gender bias and abusive marriage partners. Thank you for your informative review.

This sounds like a thought provoking read. I'm very much into reading about hurdles in life and stories of resilience. Skin of colour is an issue in my country as well, so the book sounds appealing to me. Congratulations to the author.

"Deceptive Calm" follows the story of a black orphan girl, by the name of Vanessa. The story is set in the 20th century and deals with racial issues, gender bias, abusive relationships and romance. These are but only a few themes that this book explores. It sounds like a very powerful and engaging read, one that should definitely not be passed on. Congratulations on BOTD.

It is hard to imagine how Vanessa and others like her must have suffered under such an environment and background of racial bigotry. The main theme is moving, but I am also glad that the other themes and lessons such as childhood friendships persisting even into adulthood are equally important.
Many thanks for this amazing review, @Huini Hellen.
