Official Review of “The Goose Girl” (Books of Bayern) by Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale has created a unique and amazing kingdom in her book “The Goose Girl”. The Princess Ani is a beautiful character. Is speaks with animals, is humble, sweet, and willing to do what it takes to do what’s right. Her understanding of her place in life changes as her life is threatened. Hale shows all Ani’s special characteristics through the people she meets and the friendships she makes. Little by little her strengths are shown and magnified in each chapter.

The adventure and romance that takes place is familiar but written in such a way that it’s like experiencing it for the first time. There is intrigue throughout the story is obvious but it still makes you wonder how it will play out in the end, never quite giving everything away.

It is written in the third person and has description, wit, and flow so that it’s quite easy to read and stay aware of what is going on. Hale combines just the right amount of dialog and description in her story. The world Hale creates with her imagination is so interesting that it makes you crave the next complimentary books that follow. I give this a 5 out of 5.

This was an incredible series which I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good read. It takes little known fairy tales and puts new twists on it that keep whoever is reading captivated. The heroine isn't perfect and her journey isn't easy, she goes from being the isolated albeit pampered princess to a lost girl forced to work with people from an entirely different social world than her. There's betrayal, romance, and a wonderful sort of magic to be found here so I suggest that everyone at least give it a try, I can almost guarantee you won't regret it!

Ah! I was searching for "fairy tales" and I came across this post by chance. I remember having this book several years ago and LOVING it.
And coincidentally, my best friend's name is Ani, and she loves fairy tale stories -- she's the one who got me addicted to them -- and I recommended it to her. It was the first time someone else had found a fairy tale-like story before she did, and she became just as fascinated by it as I did.
Thanks for this review. It brings back great memories for me!

This is one of my favorite books. I love the twist on a little-known fairy tale, and the rest of the series is just as good as the first one. Would recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy and fairy-tale retellings.

This was always one of my favorite stories growing up and it reads just like a fairytale but for "grown up girls" like I thought I was. It is still one of the books I turn to when I feel down as Hale has created such a beautiful in-depth world and beloved characters.

"The Goose Girl" is not too well-known, but I remember hearing it when I was a little girl. This books sounds like a worthy adaptation of the fairy tale and it is definitely one that I would like to read.

I didn't even realize that the Goose Girl was an old fairy tale before I read this book! I guess you're right! It's not very well known! (okay, just because I have never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't well known. I lived a sheltered life)

Shannon Hale is an amazing author. I started by reading her Princess Academy, then read Goose Girl. I loved Goose Girl and will definitely read it again!
