The ambitious goal of learning more about the universe and humanity in Sum and Substance gives the author a high bar to reach. The book covers the topics from the dawn of the creation of the universe up until today and is split into several sections. The first part introduces the scope of the book. It explains the scientific method and its importance in validating how the world works. One chapter is devoted to the mathematical representation of astronomically large and small numbers to help the reader recognize the immensity and proportion of the data presented.

In addition, the author reveals their upbringing and shows the reader the relationship between humanity and the universe. This quick overview sets the stage for parts two and three, which dive deeper into the origin of the universe and the life of the world we live in.

Finally, in part four, the author wraps up all the information presented with their thoughts on the future and the meaning of life.

The information and statistics are easy to read, and examples aid the reader in understanding. These lead the reader to an appreciation and awe of the vastness and complexity of the universe, the complex nature of humanity, and the challenges they face. Although the volume of data can feel overwhelming, its delivery is engaging.

The author focuses on the how of things and not the why, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions from the information provided. The author’s leanings become evident in some parts; however, there is no attempt to persuade the reader to take a particular viewpoint.

The book serves as an excellent launching pad for further investigation into a myriad of directions of the reader’s choice. In the final part, the author delves into several topics, including belief systems, the environment, and warfare. The author goes over the histories of each and offers possible paths for the future and the outcome of those paths.

The book is a fascinating read. Despite a few editing errors, primarily involving punctuation, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the universe and the problems confronting civilization.

The theme in the book seems heavy and complex. But then, the review noted that the information and statistics are easy to read. Thank you for your detailed review.
