Ahhhh this sounds like a perfect read for me. I've been seeking a book that has the crime, mystery, suspense etc. genre, but also something that out of the norm. The gangster part instead of the usual detective part is definitely intriguing and I'm curious to see how all this unfold. Thanks for a great review. Congrats on BOTD and free book.

Bonz isn't a hero, but he's not a ruthless villain either He's simply someone who does what he has to do without remorse and with great cunning

"Catching a Bird" by Bonz Buonopane is a story about a sociopathic hitman and atypical mobster named Bonz Buonopane, a retired gangster that lives with his wife and two sons in Delaware. His wife owned a salon and one day while Bonz was sitting there, he received a call from a very hysterical woman named Jamie that he was unable to understand. The woman’s husband Jack takes over the call and Bonz learns that their daughter Stacy was murdered a year ago. He told the husband he was not a PI. Jack told Bonz that his reputation as a guy that gets things done is why they called. He agrees to meet them at the Ocean Grill. Jamie told Bonz that the police thought Stacy was a victim of the Worcester County Killer. Jack pays Bonz $2,000 to find his daughter’s killer. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat as the mystery unfolds. The sample was very descriptive and Bonz really enjoyed his job. Mysteries are my genre and I higly recommend this book.

Bonz was a retired gangster who received a call from a distraught couple. They wanted him to help them find their daughter's killer. Bonz travels across state lines and reaches his contacts in both the criminal world and law enforcement. The ensuing adventure is captivating and raises many ethical questions.

I have always heard this saying that you use a thief to catch another thief. I see this play out here. A retired gangster gets paid to find a girl's killer. Let's see whether his experience as a gangster helps him.

I love a good crime thriller and this book is a perfect read for me. I'm not sure if the story is entirely fictional or if it's based on true events. Bonz story is very interesting and I want to read it. Congratulations on making botd!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on “Catching a Bird.” The intriguing premise of Bonz Buonopane stepping into a complex investigation adds depth to the narrative. The exploration of Stacy’s character and the dark themes surrounding her murder promise a gripping read.

The story subverts typical detective narratives by featuring a retired gangster who reluctantly steps back into a world he once dominated, blurring the lines between criminality and the pursuit of justice.

This review makes it clear—if you enjoy gritty crime thrillers with an unpredictable plot and a protagonist who doesn’t play by the rules, Catching a Bird is a must-read. Bonz Buonopane sounds like the kind of anti-hero that keeps you glued to the pages—morally questionable yet undeniably compelling. He is a character you love to hate (or maybe just love).

I appreciate the mention of the timeline issue, but it sounds like the raw intensity of the story more than made up for it.

I'm quite intrigued at how Bonz conducted his operations, despite not being a serial killer. I would like to also read what he established about Stacy's killer.
