Motherhood is a personal and unique experience that can only be truly fathomed when one goes into it. But then, it is helpful to acquaint oneself with the experiences of those who have been there, at least to gain an idea of how the whole thing might look. In her book, Rest for the Weary Mama: Words of Hope and Encouragement for the Worn-Out Mom, Morgan A. Ellis shares her journey becoming a mother and raising three kids. Ellis has become vulnerable and allows readers into some critical incidents in her life as a mother with the aim of assuring moms out there that they are not alone in whatever struggle they are facing and that help, both human and divine, is indeed available and obtainable.

Some of the personal challenges the author has shared in this book include the third-degree tear from the birth of her first son, Gabriel; behavior issues from her children; a health issue with her daughter Adelle; and burnout from family obligations and career. Going through this account left me feeling both emotional and grateful, emotional because I was deeply moved by these daily toils and grinds, and grateful because it was incredibly amazing how far mothers can go and how much they can endure for the sake of their children.

Ellis also shares the redemptive actions she has taken and how far she has come in this journey of motherhood. Moms will learn about the incredible shifts in the author's mental, spiritual and social lives and how these have paid off in her "ministry of motherhood." Central in this turnaround is her absolute reliance and confidence in God and His promises. This journey, this walk and work in faith and communion with God, was long and hard but turned out to be the greatest good thing she has experienced. She now invites other moms to partake in this.

There are several references to the Bible to help readers better connect to her story and her invitation to find true rest in God. The author has also done a great job with the way she explores certain realities and concepts to build a framework through which she can make her teaching more relatable and impactful. Take, for instance, the exploration of the birth experience of mama flamingo, the making of diamonds and the concept of Audience of One to illustrate certain points. There are "Questions to Ponder" and "Try This" sessions that are aimed to help readers assess and redefine their lives.

The author's word choices are soothing and encouraging. She speaks personally to moms and tries to offer them some layers of closure and validation. She encourages moms to cast the cares and worries of motherhood on the Lord and trust in His promise to provide rest, rest that brings "peace, hope and security." I found her conviction and testimony striking.

While the book covers the universal struggles and joys of motherhood, I need to note that it will be better enjoyed by Christians, given the dominant acknowledgment of the providence of God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit in this journey and the heavy Bible quotes.

I have no complaints to report about this book. Rest for the Weary Mama: Words of Hope and Encouragement for the Worn-Out Mom earns 5 out of 5 stars because it is comforting, inspiring and offers a good amount of information on what to expect upon becoming a mom and how to navigate it.
