Close. Being able to read was a prerequisite back in the day.

HINT: the word you are looking for comes from the word "share"
"Being able to read was a prerequisite back in the day."
Do I detect some sarcasm in your comment?
Not at all. When this group had the most power (though they still hold a significant amount of power), few people knew how to read.

A College of Bishops ? (or Cardinals?)

You are so close. But even people who are not Bishops or Cardinals in this same line of thinking are part of the... [riddle answer].
(By the way, the riddle is inspired by your short story)

That's it. It comes from the Greek word "kleros," which means "to share." And since it involves all kinds of religious figures, they can be married or not, cloistered or not...

Unfortunately no. I think the answer is far more well known than The Velveteen Rabbit.

I was going to say Winnie-the-Pooh, but I think that is another male character.

Yep. I thought about that, too.
Snoopy maybe? But I don't think it's that old.

Pretty sure Snoopy is also a boy.

HINT 2 : The animal and boy lived on a farm with the boy's parents in the TV version.

HINT 3 : The original versions of this animal's stories are not animations. (Don't know if they are now - probably are.)

HINT 4 : Though the clue says that the original story (movie) takes place in England it is easier to imagine Scotland. The TV series takes place in the U.S.A.
