Review of Room Without Walls: A Transformational Journey
It is my personal opinion that there is something really inspiring about reading and learning from the struggles of others. At least for me, it gives me a sense of courage to face challenges in my personal life. Room Without Walls: A Transformational Journey by Ruth Ferguson is one such book that motivated me and urged me to keep my faith in God through life’s ups and downs.
Ruth has touched upon a lot of her personal struggles in this book and shows emotional resilience through it all. I really liked that each chapter of the book starts with a Bible verse that gives a hint about what the chapter is about. The book is mostly about the author's personal experiences, where she talks about her marriage struggles, grief, work challenges, and self-doubt. Ruth got through all these tough times by trusting in God's wisdom.
Personally, I found the author’s vulnerability and honesty to be the strongest pillars of the book. The way in which she has shared her personal experiences makes the book feel raw. Readers who have had similar circumstances in their lives will even find it relatable.
As for me, I resonated more with the latter chapters of the book where Ruth reflects on faith as a sustaining force. Her experiences of getting over self-doubt and the gradual realization that her worth is not defined by others was something that stuck with me. The author has included many biblical references, and out of that, there was one, Psalm 139:14, that emphasizes self-worth beyond external validation, which I found very inspiring.
Another thing I liked about the book was how it included the chapter’s summary and takeaways at the end of each chapter. It also included a section of ‘Reader’s Response and Reflection’ that mostly consisted of questions, which was again a great addition, in my opinion, because it gave a sense of engagement, which went beyond reading and made this book more of a transformational guide than just a normal memoir.
The chapter ‘Victim of Victor?’ was also a thought-provoking one. The shift in mindset from feeling powerless to finding inner strength through faith was something I found relatable, as I have been through a similar experience. Another powerful takeaway from the book that I will keep with me is that God's plan isn't always clear, but faith and patience can lead to unexpected blessings.
The one thing I felt could be improved was that, since the book is more focused on Christian teachings and includes a lot of biblical references, readers who are not religious or do not connect with Christianity may find it less relatable; so, making the book all-religion friendly would benefit a wider audience.
Considering my personal likes as stated in the above paragraphs, I will rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I have deducted one star because the book focuses a lot on the Bible, and it is filled with biblical references, making the reach of the book limited. Other than that, I have nothing to dislike about the book. The editing is simply awesome, and I did not find any visible errors throughout my reading.
I would recommend this book to anyone on the journey of self-discovery.
