In this book, Thaisa Fernandes introduces us to amazing Brazilian cuisine even as she weaves in personal anecdotes and the rich culinary heritage of her home country (Brazil) and the United States. The photos were taken by Izabelle Alvares. And you need to know—the recipes are all vegan.

Vegan Anniversary in the Bay Area: A Decade of Sweet Memories from Brazil and Cultural Exchanges in the United States by Thaisa Fernandes is one of the best cookbooks I have read recently. First, I was impressed by the level of commitment invested in the cooking, testing and photoshoots. The instructions were diligently prepared, detailed, easy to follow and had this warm undertone. I felt as though the author was by my side, guiding me, and I guess this would be a great boost when I try out some of the cuisines. Right now, I have four in mind: goiabinha (guava cookie), pudim (Brazilian flan), sweet potato pie and crème brûlée. Furthermore, the tips for alternative options, the suggested timeframes for seeing better results and the metric charts were really helpful.

Beyond the recipes, the author has also given us a glimpse into her childhood memories, like the thrills of birthday parties and the place of brigadeiro during such a celebration. Thaisa also talks about her decision to go vegan and the transformation she has experienced over the past decade living in the Bay Area. According to the author, the idea for this book came when she shared with Izabelle her plan to celebrate ten years of being vegan and living in the Bay Area.

While I enjoyed reading the recipes and was excited to try something new, I was also deeply impacted by the author's personal anecdotes. Two of those especially stood out for me: the lessons she has learned from baking and from her cats and dogs. There is so much wisdom in the little things we do, so much value from the little company we keep and so much sense of fulfillment from the little moments with family and friends.

This book was exceptionally well edited, and I have no complaint to report about it. Given the aforementioned merits, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Lovers of Brazilian cuisine will find this cookbook helpful. This material will also delight those eager to explore new flavors.
