Forgiveness and Reconciliation Detangled, by Isoken Ogbeide, is a book that discusses forgiveness in detail from a biblical perspective. In today’s world, most conflicts and disagreements are always “bandaged” with “forgive and forget”, which can be harmful to maintaining relationships, especially when the underlying cause of the dispute or disagreement is not taken care of. Here, the author uses the stories of Abraham and Lot, Joseph and his brothers, and Esau and Jacob, to name a few examples, to teach lessons on how forgiveness can be given or obtained.

With Abraham and Lot, we saw how they were able to retain their relationship even though there were strains caused by their servants and their many resources, as there was not enough space to contain them both. Instead of resorting to fights, they decided to go their separate ways, and when it was time for Abraham to help Lot, he did. This teaches us to know when to let go, even if we like them very much, as it helps retain relationships.

I like how the author helps debunk the normal way a lot of people resolve issues. I like that she also addresses the situations of the offender and the offended. The offender has to know what they did and also seek forgiveness or repentance with remorse, and this can be seen in the case of the prodigal son and his father (another case discussed in the book). The offended, while they might forgive, are not obliged to continue the relationship, that is, the reconciliation aspect. I love the addition of Bible verses and African proverbs used to buttress her points. Each story has a lesson the readers are to pick from, and I’m sure, like me, you will see yourself being advised in some of these stories.

There’s nothing I dislike about the book. It was short, easy to read, and worth the read. Forgiveness is not easy but is needed, if not for the other person, but for yourself too, as holding onto anger and malice can cause health and spiritual distress. You can read more about this in the book. This is why I rate this 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this to people looking for explained Christian views on forgiveness. I saw no errors, so it's perfectly edited.

Indeed, I do not agree with ‘Forgive and forget’ concept because it puts the burden to the victim. I also do not think a person can ever totally forget the injustice done towards them. Yes, they can forgive, but forget? Not so much. I will not read this book simply because it tackles these concept from the Christianity point of view, since I am not a Christian. However, you did a great job in writing this review. Keep up the amazing work.

This sounds like a beautiful book. As an African myself and a religious person too, I am quite thrilled to read this one. It will be a real treat for me, so thank you for bringing this book into my focus.

Forgiveness may be difficult, but as Ogbeide beautifully illustrates, it is essential—not just for the sake of others, but for our own emotional, spiritual, and even physical well-being. I highly recommend Forgiveness and Reconciliation Detangled to anyone seeking a clear, Christian perspective on forgiveness, especially those navigating hurt, resentment, or the challenge of letting go.
