Truly monstrous, non mainstream books

Post by ryan2 »

I guess I'm in the Halloween spirit and am really in the mood for a good monster book. I've read most of the mainstream horror authors though, and I'm looking for something new. This means no Lovecraft, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker or I guess Thomas Harris as well. Probably not Richard Matheson either. Does anyone know of a really good truly monstrous that is not written by these authors? Again, its not that I didn't necessarily like reading these authors. It's just that I don't think I can get any more out of them then I already have. I want another author.

Robert McCammon and Dan Simmons, check them out, both are great! Swan Song for McCammon probably and either Summer of Night or The Terror for Simmons.

I just bought The Terror today. It looks so interesting. Will it scare the socks off of me though? I love Dan Simmons' Hyperion series and I'd like to read more of his stuff!

The Terror gave my mother nightmares but it wasn't all that scary to me. It definitely has its moments but in my opinion it wasn't nearly as scary as Summer of Night. The history aspect is really interesting though, and I knew nothing about boats or sailing, so it is worth reading if you like that sort of thing. It is quite sad in some ways though, which reminded me of Lonesome Dove.

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, it was the inspiriation for Dracula and the writing reminds me of Anne Rice's style.

I've read two books by Richard Laymon called 'Night Show' and 'Funland'. 'Night Show' was enjoyable, scary in places and quite light. 'Funland' I found actually made me jump once or twice, good surprises in that one. 'Heart Shaped Box' by Joe Hill is my favourite horror book and one I recommend constantly to horror fans, never fails to creep me out.
