Review of God Must've Spent a Little More Time on You
[Following is a volunteer review of "God Must've Spent a Little More Time on You" by Gio Flores.]
God Must’ve Spent A Little More Time On You by Gio Flores is an autobiography containing the darkest depths of humanity and the shimmering light of hope. The author traverses some of life’s most difficult challenges and has used his anger, fear, and grief to create a riveting story that serves as inspiration for those facing similar challenges.
Beginning in Dallas, Texas, Giovanni (Gio) Flores’ life changed when his mother walked out the apartment door, leaving young Gio and one of his brothers behind. This event was the catalyst that set the author down a dark and trying path. While facing food and housing insecurities at home, the author chose to use humor and boxing as an emotional outlet. Entrance into high school marked the beginning of a new series of challenges. Juggling academics, teenage love, and thoughts about his future left Gio feeling the pressure to be loved and successful. With perseverance, Giovanni Flores became an airman within the United States Air Force (USAF). His time in the military left him with a Purple Heart award, a divorce, and undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Years of extreme stress and abuse left the author struggling with feelings of darkness and loneliness. Until someone decided to get to know him further and asked him a life-altering question. This question would once again change the author’s life and send him down a path of introspection and hope.
Gio Flores put his heart and soul into his autobiography. He explores his experiences and emotions with the intent to provide a source of comfort for those experiencing the hurts he has faced at the hands of his family and the military. The author placed well-thought-out trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. Readers who are sensitive to topics such as PTSD, depression, abandonment, suicide, war, and offensive language should take caution when reading.
After careful consideration, I would rate this autobiography a 4 out of 5 points. As stated in the book’s introduction, the author is a novice writer. The speech and tone of the book are not polished and flowery. Word choice and language are commonplace and reflective of internal musings. However, I believe this all adds to the authenticity of the book. The author has poured himself into the pages and leaves the reader feeling like a bystander in his life.
If you have experienced heart-wrenching relationships or the trenches of military life and are looking for a ray of hope, then this autobiography is for you.
