Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe by Sean O’Banion is the sequel to the first Beating Death novel. It is divided into three parts. It is a blend of supernatural powers, military conspiracies, witchcraft, dark government secrets, and family legacy that is told from Robert O’Banion’s, the protagonist’s, point of view. Robert O’Banion was a former Navy veteran with supernatural powers. He could fly. However, this ability was to be kept a secret, or else he would turn into a lab rat for the government officials. His main goal is to save the environment and to protect the only living planet known. He reconnects with allies—witches, biker gangs, old military buddies—to plan a massive protection ritual. However, he discovers that he is pursued by shadowy assassins, possibly posing as MS-13. Rob receives a talisman from his dying father and is tasked with delivering it to Bob Bolton in Jackson City. Rob and his team must complete the ritual, protect the talisman, and defeat an evil that has plagued Harvey County for generations. Do they make it? Does he survive the assassins on his back? Read the book to find out.

I loved reading Beating Death. I cannot even remember how many times I highlighted in my notes with the comment "I love his sense of humor." From the first chapter, where Robert introduced himself, saying, "My name is Robert O’Banion. I can fly. Not like in a plane. Anybody can do that if they’ve got the dough. But kinda like a bird, except I don’t have to keep flapping my arms. I’m glad, too, because they’d get really sore really fast. And I won’t do a “bombing run” and leave something memorable behind." I knew I was in for a joyful ride. The dialogue was also another part of the book I loved. The “S-up, ese?” or "Krackk" gun sound had my heart. This was an enjoyable read for me.

I have absolutely no areas to criticize. This book is fully deserving of the perfect five out of five star rating. There are a lot of curse words; however, that is part of everyday life and should not hinder anyone's enjoyment of this book. This book offers a blend of several genres, which makes it open to everyone's enjoyment.

The book sounds incredibly moving and gripping, and it is great that at the center of the conflict stands the need to environmental protection and protecting the Earth. I am wondering how Robert survived the assassination attempts and how his secret was discovered. Thank you, @Ukaegbu Confidence, for the review.

I noticed that the first book of this series offers an interesting blend of genres with magic, modern technologies, and bits of history. I see that this sequel continues that blend with an environmental theme that enriches it. I'll look into this series. Thank you for your great review!

This review really sold me on the book! I love stories that blend supernatural elements with military and secret government plots, and Robert’s unique voice sounds like a fun perspective to follow. The quote in the beginning made me laugh—it’s refreshing to see a humorous main character in such a high-stakes storyline. Definitely adding this one to my reading list!
