I think this is an interesting read. I'm particularly intrigued by how two different people meet at the right time. And I'm definitely curious to know how their journey will unfold. Thanks for the free copy. I'll definitely check it out.

I have always been bothered about the thoughts of sword swallowing and have wondered how Duke from The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid" by Gary Robinson could poull that off. I can't even look at images of this on the internet. Congratulations on BOTD.

Gary and Robinson seem like they're really messed up. I hope they find their way. It's interesting how Gary didn't learn anything in college, which buttresses the fact that it's not about the certificate but the knowledge gained in college. Well done for the nice review

Gary Robinson's book The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid is broken up into three sections. Duke Reynolds, the sword swallower, is the subject of the first section, while Gary Robinson, the Chico child, is the subject of the second. The two characters are brought together in the third section to talk about how they affect one another.

The title sounds painful) But seriously, I don't believe I will be able to enjoy this book. No offense meant to anyone, it is just that the subject matter of circus and alcoholism are not really my cup of tea. Congratulations on being BOTD anyway!

The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid is a raw, emotional, and semi-autobiographical novel about two troubled men—Duke, a retired circus performer with a dark past, and Gary, a self-destructive young man from Chico, California. When their paths cross, Duke becomes an unlikely mentor, helping Gary confront his addictions and find purpose.

The book explores themes of addiction, trauma, redemption, and human connection with unflinching honesty. Robinson’s writing is heartfelt and gritty, often touching but occasionally unpolished. Some parts, especially Gary’s arc, lack the depth of Duke’s, but the emotional core holds strong throughout.

Recommended for:
Fans of character-driven fiction, redemption arcs, or memoir-style storytelling with a rough edge.
Head ups:
Mature themes, uneven editing, and a philosophical tone that might not suit every reader.

From the short sample I read, it appears that the alcohol addiction, which links the two main characters, Duke and Gary, is the catalyst for life change. The trajectory of a life can change direction with a single word or a simple interaction with another human. I am always amazed how a simple conversation can impact another's life so deeply. This sounds like a great character development story if you don't mind drugs, alcohol and nudity.

Destiny helpers, as we learn from this book, can be found in the most unexpected places. The unique relationship between Duke and Gary, both of whom face their challenges, is a testament to this. Their bond is not just a plot point but a significant aspect that keeps the readers engaged. This book is a treasure trove of life lessons, prompting us to ponder our own life choices. Thank you for this thought-provoking review.

Based on a real-life story, the author beautifully weaves the stories of Gary and Dude and blends them in the last part. A worthy and insightful read. I have read this book and your review provides a precise overview of the book. Thanks

This review gives a vivid insight into The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid, highlighting its strong character development and raw portrayal of addiction. The dynamic between Gary and Duke sounds compelling, with humor balancing the darker themes. It’s clear the book resonates emotionally, especially for fans of introspective, gritty narratives.

This is a very interesting story about two men who find themselves at a pivotal moment in their lives, filled with alcohol and lack of sense, with major flaws and insecurities, but with tremendous character growth. It's a good book to read about the lives of these characters, as they were and what they became. It contains humor and very good conversations.

Gritty and raw. A powerful story of addiction, redemption, and unlikely friendship. Vivid characters and emotional depth. Not for the faint of heart dark but ultimately hopeful. A unique blend of memoir and fiction.

This is an intriguing novel about two people who met in unimaginable circumstances, and who had a profound impact on each other's lives that would forever change them. Duke Reynolds, a sword swallower, lives only for the entertainment, the adrenaline, and the risk his job provides. Gary Robinson is a recovering alcoholic who has nothing more to live for. How did they meet? What could they have in common?
