Review of Buried Bones
When a dead body is discovered buried outside a cabin in Utah, all eyes are immediately focused on the ex-boyfriend, Ben. Even though he hasn't been around for ages, the entire community is quick to assume that Ben is the murderer. Only Maggie, a former prosecutor, believes that Ben is innocent. To make this even more complicated, Maggie literally just met Ben. Will this former prosecutor's desire to make up for past transgressions be enough to keep Ben out of jail? Is Ben actually the murderer and just capitalizing on Maggie's past? You'll have to read on to find out.
Buried Bones by Bonnie Moore is a crime thriller that follows former prosecutor, Maggie Anderson, as she tries to uncover what happened to Audrey Stillman when her body was found buried outside a cabin in Utah. As Maggie digs deeper into this mystery, she begins to uncover more than she bargained for. Some powerful families run this tight-knit community, and often they don't like outsiders digging into their secrets. Between threats of violence, political pressure, and flat-out lies, Maggie fights hard to uncover the truth behind Audrey's death.
As far as murder mystery novels go, this book had a lot of great things going for it. The pace was just quick enough to keep me interested, and there was enough intrigue to keep me guessing. What I liked the most about this book was how the author was able to reveal more and more information as the book progressed. Through the use of multiple perspectives, flashbacks, and even Audrey's journal, the reader was treated to an ever-widening view of what happened.
There was only one minor issue that I had with this book. What I disliked the most was the deep-seated motivation that Maggie had in defending Ben. Without actually knowing the defendant, nor having any connection to the case, I find it hard to believe that Maggie would be so dedicated. Despite her need to ensure that Ben isn't wrongly convicted because of her past as a prosecutor, amid literal death threats from the town's citizens, even the strongest will would be compromised.
Given the book's tempo, excitement, and mystery, I have no problems whatsoever giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. I took away one star for the aspect of realism above, but it really was a minor point. If you are a fan of murder mystery novels, this book will undoubtedly be a great addition to your collection. If you are looking for non-stop action or something outside of the crime genre, however, you can likely skip this book.
