Review of Outfection
John has a secret. It’s one that’s been passed down from generation to generation and gives him the unique ability to help those who are beyond hope. However, his ability is a threat to the powerful corporations and governments that have made their fortunes off human suffering. As he travels across the country doing what he can to help people, he is forced to constantly look over his shoulder for the powerful syndicates that are chasing after him. It’s a lonely existence. Then, he meets Emily and realizes that she also has a secret that needs to be protected. As they race from those pursuing them, their connection deepens. It also endangers their friends and family. How far will they go to protect each other?
Outfection by Craig Stucko is an action-packed story about those who will do whatever they can to help people and those who are relentless in their pursuit to stop them.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt like it took my favorite parts of every genre and combined them into one story. There’s plenty of action and suspense, but it is fueled by a complex and thought-provoking plot. The romance between John and Emily is more about human connection than superficial attraction. There are medical mysteries being studied in a lab, as well as magical moments that happen when the characters leave modern devices behind and connect with nature. All in all, it’s a rather diverse story.
This book is quite lengthy, and there are a lot of characters to follow. However, each character was well-developed, so I didn’t have any trouble keeping track of them. I liked how every character had a unique journey and path to follow, but they all played a role in the overarching plot. Rather than devoting an entire chapter to one character, the book alternated between characters in shorter scenes. The scenes ranged in length from a few paragraphs to several pages. While it might seem like this would make the story more convoluted, I thought it made it easier to follow. The quick scene changes made it easier to remember what was happening with each character. It also added to the feelings of suspense and tension, which made the story feel more fast-paced.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that it was not professionally edited. Other than that, I thought it was excellent. The writing was descriptive, and the characters felt real and nuanced. The plot was engaging, and I had a hard time putting the book down. Therefore, I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
