Review of Minimum Wage Millionaire (Version 1, released July 28th 2025)
As a young person who is only a few years out of college, I am always looking to learn more about personal finance and how to set myself up for success later in life. I was excited to read Minimum Wage Millionaire by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes, and it did not disappoint. It is a succinct set of guidelines that, if followed, should lead one to becoming a millionaire in ten to twenty years. It is chock full of practical advice and easy-to-understand rules.
I appreciated the use of figures throughout the book. There are several well-designed figures that break down different ideas, such as different incomes and how much to allot to necessities, savings, novelties, etc., based on the budget set within the book. I find such visuals quite helpful in understanding numerically based information. I also think that Hughes did an excellent job of creating vivid imagery to illustrate different points. For example, getting into debt was described as jumping off a slowly moving ship. No matter how slow the ship is going, if you are attempting to swim after it, you will most likely never catch up. I found this to be a striking image that resonated with me.
I did feel as though some of the rules were not quite applicable to everyone in their current form. For example, the book states that you should express interest in a promotion every two months. At my place of employment, they only do evaluations for promotions semi-annually, so inquiring every two months does not seem helpful if it is not within the timeframe that promotions are being evaluated. I think that the advice is helpful, but it might need to be tailored to each individual's experience as opposed to being thought about as hard and fast rules that cannot be broken. This is my only critique of the book, and it is not significant enough to decrease the rating.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this to everyone of working age, especially to those who are just starting out. I was quite fortunate to have been given at least some of an education on personal finance at a young age, but many have not. I feel as though this book breaks down the steps needed to be financially successful in a way that anyone should be able to easily understand.
