Happy Bloomsday! (16 June)

Happy Bloomsday to all! As you may know, "Bloomsday" is the most famous date in fiction, 16 June 1904, when the novel "Ulysses" by James Joyce occurs in Dublin. So named because the "hero" of the novel is Leopold Bloom.

I celebrated early by watching the film "Bloom" -- a recent film depicting the great novel. And today I'll read more Ulysses, as I'm in the middle of re-reading it anyway.

Yes indeed Happy Bloomsday everyone ... as my contibution I'll reread the short story The Dead. I absolutely love that story in particular & reread it regularly. Loved the movie version too.

I've got both film versions, "Bloom" (the newer 2006 version) and "Ulysses" the 60s Joseph Strick version. Both are excellent.

Have you seen the in-progress "Ulysses Seen" website? It's a graphic novel version of the book and it's amazing! Just 2 chapters yet ready, Telemachus and Calypso. It's amazing -- a carefully drawn version and you can click on the "commentary" button and read in depth about that drawing. Wonderful!

Incidentally, besides having the Random House and Bodley Head versions of Ulysses (classic US & Brit editions) I've got the Gabler "corrected text" version and, yes, my P&J (pride and joy), a Shakespeare & Co. Paris first edition! That i acquired at an estate sale for $20. Yes, twenty bucks.
