Underrated yet powerful Horror Writers?

Post by BGChargers123 »

While I love and deeply respect the work of household names such as Stephen King, H P Lovecraft and Jack Ketchum, I was wondering if there were some lesser-known authors of the genre that produce works as well-written and chilling as these men do, as well as the novels that evidence their skills and craft. I appreciate all responses and recommendations, great way for me to check out some new horror for the Summer.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski was a fun, quick read. Quick not because it's short, but because it gets you hooked and trapped exploring the (oh so many) corridors of the pages.
My teacher read it and it scared her so much that she had to put measuring tapes on the walls. Another friend of mine who read it said he had issues with the dark. When I read it, I didn't get any nightmares, though I did have some dreams.
I highly recommend it.

Also, The Pear Shaped Man by George R.R. Martin was damn creepy, though it's just a short story.

I hear John Dies at the End is a good novel (and they read it in a Horror Writing Class, so I assume it's scary), but I've never read it.

If you want just some good scary reading, try creepy pasta or /r/nosleep.

Thanks for the response. I will definitely check out your suggestions, House Of Leaves sounds like something that I would really enjoy and I have also heard good things about John Dies at the End. Look forward to checking them out!
