Icon Ketchup Clouds - Annabel Pitcher

Post by Hannaa_Campbell »

"I've done something wrong. What I've done is awful. The worst thing? I've got away with it."

At first glance, I was a little hesitant to purchase this book due to it's peculiar name. 'Ketchup Clouds' . After a little thought, before I knew it I was already at chapter six, or how Annabel Pitcher (the author) referred to it as 'Part Six'. As a fifteen year old, hearing that this book was also of a teenager's point of view currently going through her GCSEs appealed to me considerably as maybe this could be relatable and from a perspective of which I could understand. And it was, to an extent.

"Dear Mr S Harris," . Yes. This book is set out in the form of letters addressed to a man on death row named Stuart Harris, later deemed 'Stu' for short (in case you wanted to know, he was placed on death row because he shot his wife) and whom is writing the letter? A young British girl who's real name is Alice Jones, however, up until the last letter, addresses herself as simply 'Zoe'. The reason behind the fake name was due to young Alice securing her safety as she believes she is the reason behind her *SPOILER ALERT* boyfriend, Max's, death and she does not want to be prosecuted for such a crime.

Like all best selling novels, this book has a love triangle. However, this triangle does not consist of a werewolf, a vampire and an awkward teenager, instead we have Zoe, Max and Max's older brother, Aaron.

It's often hard to come across a book that portrays a teenage girl accurately, but when you find that book, it is utter bliss, and bliss was my exact feeling upon reading 'Ketchup Clouds'. The way Zoe acts, the way she thinks, even the way she texts should be seen as a lesson to other authors on how to write from a young females POV.

Moreover, Pitcher includes drawings that Zoe has made and this makes her seem more real, more humane. You see an expression of her character through her little sketches to Stu, this made me feel like I knew Zoe, and this is incredibly important when reading any book.

Unfortunately, even the best books have their flaws. Sadly I found this book to be slightly anti-climactic. As well written as it was and as truly relatable it is, the 'Awful' thing that she did was really just an accident and in my own opinion, not even her fault. I won't spoil how Max died however I will say, do not expect blood to be shed.

In conclusion, if you enjoy a good love story with satisfactory comedic value and would like to take a look inside the mind of a young female, Ketchup Clouds is most definitely for you.

I look forward to reviewing more spectacular books.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review, feedback is welcome.

I have been wanting to read this book for a while now and after reading your review I must say I will most certainly begin to read this novel which appears to have many layers and a bit of depth to it which is something that I look for! I am assuming that this is your first review and from what I have read you can write clearly, intelligently and terms of a book review this incorporates everything that I wanted to know and has provided me with more than enough persuasion to finally read what sounds like a great book. :D

Keep up the good work!
