Thomas Hardy- a pessimist?

Post by amen jamir »

I have read quite a few of Hardy's novels and liked them. My most recent is 'The Mayor of Casterbridge.' I felt the element of subdued happiness at the end of his stories make it more realistic though he is often claimed to be a pessimistic writer.

What are your thoughts on him?
