It’s No Picnic by Kenneth Myers is a mystery short story. It is fictional and focuses on a retired detective who, after just moving to a new town, takes up a case. It takes place in a small town full of quirky and suspicious characters.

Alex Lax is a retired detective. He moves to Longport to relax and escape his past, but is pulled into a missing person case. Miss K.’s twin sister went missing a month ago and the police are not taking the case seriously. She suspects that her sister has been murdered. Alex investigates and meets a string of bizarre characters linked with the disappearance. What he ultimately reveals is surprising and unexpected. It changes Alex’s existence and the existence of the entire town.

I found It’s No Picnic to be a very interesting read. It is written in an enigmatic way that makes the readers think. The story is not laid out completely clearly on purpose, I believe, and some parts are there to puzzle readers. Some of the characters in the story spoke in riddles. Quite a few of the characters seemed as if they would fit nicely into a Lewis Carroll book. Sometimes, I felt like a piece of the story went over my head. I do not feel like it diminished what I took away from the story, however, and I feel like the details I did pick up made me appreciate the story more. I think it is good there are little bits I did not catch because readers will benefit from the challenge.

I thought the end of the book was surprising and I did not expect anything of the sort to happen. Because of the ending and the overall sinister and suspenseful tone of the short story, I think the story is very memorable. While the reader is trying to piece together the mystery of what happened to the twin sister, the story is also revealing Alex’s role in the story and that is just as big of a mystery.

I'm rating It’s No Picnic by Kenneth Myers 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to readers interested in a challenge, especially those readers who do not have a lot of time for reading. It’s No Picnic is a quick read, but full of thought. The interesting characters and the unique way in which Myers unfolds the story make It’s No Picnic a challenging and rewarding read.
