its a historical account of an explorer who got lost trying to find a lost city in the amazon.

so basically books based on historical fact about explorers, lost cities, ancient mysteries, etc

Well, there is King Solomon's Mines, but I think H. Rider Haggard is pretty racist. It is exactly what you describe though.
