Re: Library or owning?

So, here's the thing. I used to think I had to own books (I certainly cannot use an e-reader), but considering how much I read that would mean spending about $100 a month if not more! So, for the past year I've been using the library and I love it. And if I come across a life-changer, a heart-redefiner, I will go buy it :)

I used to prefer only owning books. But then I had more books than places to put them. Now I'm either always borrowing from the library or purchasing books on my kindle. Technology is great, but I still wanna turn actual pages every now and then.

I haven't been to a library in years - I have too many books to read at home to be worth going down to a library. Also the libraries around here are pretty basic, and not always have the latest books in the genres I love reading, so yes owning my own books (I currently have more or less 2000) is my favorite.

Owning. When I like a book, I'll want to reread it over and over again and go back to it once in a while.

Definitely own! On a tablet, you can look back at you've read anytime.

Why not both?

I like to own the ones I go back to, over and over, or books that are good for quoting and referencing. More than that is too much to carry around.

I own a lot of books. I also use the library a lot. I'll get books from the library if I want to check out the author or series, and if i end up liking it, I'll buy them to reread.

Owning, definitely. I have a habit of highlighting and annotating everything that I read, as it helps me to absorb information and make it easy to reference quotes. Though I really do like the feeling of being in a library: surrounded by books and people speaking in hushed tones; there's something so soothing about a traditional library.

Both! Being 24 and (when I actually had time before I started my MLIS) a college student, it's hard to be able to buy books when you could go through about 10-15 a month. I buy my favorites, and it doesn't hurt that working in a library I don't have overdue fines the way patrons do, and often the librarians don't mind me looking through the new books before anyone else touches them. :) I get all my movies from the library or Netflix anyway.

I prefer to own my books because sometimes I don't finish it before the due date. I have 3 kids so it can get pretty hectic around our house sometimes. I also like to re-read books so it's always nice to own it

I always prefer to own my books because I can always re-read them whenever I want, and they all have that 'new book smell'.

I prefer to own my books. That's because I usually want to read them either repeatedly or at my own pace rather than being enslaved by a library sure Daye.

I go through so many books at such a fast rate that I would be in major debt if I had to buy every book I read. For novels I mostly only read them once, and two weeks is ample time to finish a book. So it's definitely the library for me.

Both! I prefer to own books but shelf space is at a premium where I live so libraries definitely come in handy. If I really love a book or will want to refer to it often in the future, owning is the way to go.
