Official Review: Passive Income with YouTube by Raj Patel

This book describes the basics of what you might call the most “ethical” way of getting views and subscribers in order to leverage that fan base for monetary gain. He advocates putting time and effort into the endeavour to maximise the long term gain rather than exploiting other methods of gaining views (such as click bait style titles) that usually give short term gain only. At just 29 pages, this a pretty quick but helpful read; I think it would be a useful reference guide to go back to if and when you’re stuck for ideas on how to move forward with your channel.
I thought Patel did a number of things very well. The structure is very intuitive and takes one through the process right from starting a channel through to monetization. The explanations of how videos are found in a searches as part of his description of video optimisation techniques were very interesting and is definitely something I didn’t know before. I also like that he doesn’t give false hope as to how fast one can expect income from Youtube and that he doesn’t sugar coat how much work is involved in building up a base of subscribers.
On the other hand, I found it slightly annoying that he repeated the doom and gloom scenario of getting no subscribers after each piece of advice. It came across as everything had to be done this particular way “or else”. There was generally nothing wrong with any of the advice so I think it was unnecessary to have the “or else” scenario in each section. The grammar and syntax could use some work and there were also a few typos that could be easily removed in future editions. Lastly, I think that a few real life examples of Youtube channels that have used these techniques (or not) would be a good way to illustrate his points in a more varied manner.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars because Raj gives some good advice, but I felt that the book could do with being expanded upon, and that the grammar and syntax need more work. If you are interested in making Youtube videos , then this book is definitely worth your time as a primer on the various things you need to do and think about to set up your own channel.
