Recommendations?

I'm in need of another stack of books to read. Preferably some good science fiction and maybe quiet horror like Carmilla. Can someone recommend something that I might like based on what I've read?

You might also like the Ender's series by Orson Scott Card. Those are great too. Ender's Game is the first book.

Ah, well, actually I've read all thoses except for Hyperion, which I put in a request for at the library since they didn't have it. Sorry, I forgot to include them. I was hoping for something a little less well known or unusual than Asimov, Simmons,and the like.

You mentioned "quiet horror". Perhaps you might like The Girl in a Swing by Richard Adams?

It is not gory or in your face kind of horror. It creeps up on you and the best word I have for the book is "haunting". I read it over a year ago, and the book still haunts me. Most books that are defined as "horror" have not had the effect this book has had on me.

It is out of print, unfortunately, but you can get used copies for a fairly cheap price.

Based on the books on your list that I've read I think you might really enjoy Experiments At 3 Billion A.M. by Alexander Zelenyj. It's a really huge 600+ page collection of short stories that covers pretty much every genre you can think of. From the more subtle, "quiet" horror stuff you mentioned to outright gruesome horror stuff, from science fiction to really evocative, dreamy surreal/magic realism kinds of stuff, to weird bizarro fiction, it's all over the place...and that's a good thing!

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis is a good one. Sci-Fi comedy.
