A.I. Alan, by Kyle Patterson, is a new aged science fiction novel that centers on a normal guy who dreams of a life that is different than the one he has. Ryan has been living on his planet for his entire life. He has never been given the chance to do what he desperately wants, to leave. This all changes when he finds a mysterious ship and takes an adventure of a lifetime. This is an exciting space adventure with a new obstacle at every turn. Ryan and his crew of misfits must find ways to get out of the sticky situations that they find themselves in. This short novel is packed with excitement as you journey through an adventure through the eyes of a man who never thought he would see adventure.

What I like most about this fast paced, funny, and quirky novel is that it is not overly complicated. When I think of science fiction novels, I think of something that I really have to sit down with and pay attention to in order for it to all makes sense. This wasn’t the case with this novel. It was fun and easy to read. It didn’t have complicated ideas and concepts that would be hard to wrap your head around. It also didn’t use long and complicated made up words that the reader would have to try and remember. I also liked that the main character is a common person just like me. He isn’t some highly bred space fighter; he is simply a guy who unexpectedly goes on the adventure of a lifetime. The main character is easily relatable to the reader, and I love this. Patterson makes the reader feel like the reader could be Ryan in this adventure.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, I did have a few problems with it. The first, and most important, is the grammar in this book. To be specific, Patterson had an issue with comma placement. He tends to place them where they don’t need to be, as well as forgetting them when they are needed. This resulted in an abundance of run-on sentences. The second thing that I didn’t like about this novel is that it had an abrupt ending. It seemed like the author was just trying to wrap things up. Because of this, the novel feels slightly incomplete. The only thing that saves the novel from its incompleteness is its promise for a continuation. Finally, I didn’t like that the reader does not find out what “A.I” means until the end. This is less of a dislike, and more of an inconvenience. This may be common knowledge for those who read a lot of science fiction, but “A.I” means artificial intelligence.

I really enjoyed this novel and I would recommend others to read this. I am going to rate this novel at 3 out of 4 stars. This has been a nice change in traditional science fiction. It wasn’t too complicated and it will be an easy and fun read for all ages. The only reason why I didn’t give this novel a 4 star rating is because the grammar was really an issue in this novel. At times it was even difficult to read because of the grammatical mistakes. Sometimes I would find myself reading a passage two or three times just to make sense of it. If Patterson were to clean the grammar up a bit, it would be a 4 star book.

I believe that this novel would appeal to science fiction lovers, people who like humorous and witty books, and people whom like quick short reads. I think this is a nice in-between book for longer novels. I also think this novel would appeal to the person who is looking for a break if they are stuck in a genre or if they are simply looking for something new. Finally I think this novel would appeal to those who love adventures as well as teenagers and young adults because the main character is very relatable. That being said, I don’t think that this book would appeal to those people who only enjoy complicated and complex books. I, on the other hand, can’t wait for the sequel.

Thank you for your review. This sounds like an interesting book, similar to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, from your description. I may have to put this on my TBR list and give it a shot.
