Pride Prejudice and Zombies

This one has been out for a while (since 2009), but I'm curious to know everyone's take... Obviously the Jane Austen classic can and should stand alone - it did not need to be rewritten with the added zombie/ninja scenes (and illustrations!), but as a teacher of reluctant readers, I am finding myself grateful that someone did this. Before this version of the book, I would never have dreamed of putting an Austen book in my students' hands - but now I think I can!

It feels like a moral dilemma... has anyone out there read this version? What are your impressions? If you haven't read it, do you think you could? (I would venture to say that at least 80% of the book/story/characters are exactly the same as the original... the text is mostly word-for-word... Seth Grahame-Smith just added the zombie/ninja aspect, and did not really take anything out of the story).

PS: This discussion comes after my discovery that they are turning this into a movie to be released next year... thoughts on that?

i use to own a copy of this book and a cousin of mine has it now cause she never returned it

I would call myself an avid reader, but I Struggled through this one. It felt cheap compared to the original. With reluctant readers the title might get them more interested, but I do not think they will get very far quickly.

I really loved this book!! It made me laugh at how similar it was to the original novel however with its own twists and turns. It was a great read for Halloween especially. I was in a production of Night of the Living Dead and I read it backstage to "get into Character"

It was a quick read and contained the most important parts of the novel while adding zombies and martial arts to the back story instead of focusing on money. It was entertaining and I will read Little Women and Werewolves next to get the gist of the story before tackling the original novel; classical literature was never my forte and thanks to these "retellings" it helps to understand what is going on.

Well, it cannot be compared to the classic Pride and Prejudice. This book borrowed the story from the original and did what it had to do with it. I think since I'm a huge fan of the classic, I was quite unimpressed by this one.

I admit that I could not get past the first couple of chapters with this novel. I love Pride and Prejudice and have read many different remakes of the classic tale ranging from the characters being vampires to rock stars, but I could not get into the writing style. Honestly it felt too close to the original at times as it felt as it was almost word for word the original with a sprinkle of zombie fights.

Sadly, I only ended up reading Pride and Prejudice because of this book. Like many people I was intrigued by the title of the book and how it would work out. Yes, the zombie and ninja scenes were added in at seemingly random and were very cheesy but it got me reading. I then found the original book and read it to see how they parallel. While nothing really seems to be missing specifically in the zombie version, I will admit that it definitely lacks the dignity of the original and understand why that would upset the true fans. I don't think that the zombie version will ever completely overshadow the original version and I'll bet that more people will read the original now than would have otherwise. I do like the fact that heatherchoffman feels like she can actually get her students to read this book now.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite books, so this was way too far fetched for me. However, like someone mentioned earlier, kids now a days do not want to read the classics. They are too, boring, taboo, etc. I asked a girl that was a Sophomore if she knew who Mark Twain was, she answered with isn't he the guy who invented Facebook? I about dropped my jaw to the floor. I mean come on. Zombies, vampires, ninjas, etc. fascinate the younger generations and it draws them to want to read just for those elements. So maybe they will learn a bit from this book, but I hope it will lead them to want to read Jane Austen's version and even expand into her other works too.

Well... I love Pride and Prejudice. I love zombies. And I sure love my share of parody. So I was bound to like Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, wasn't I?

Nope. This book just didn't work for me. I was so excited when I bought it but it somehow managed to make zombie hunting boring. I barely made it to the end. I must add tho, that the pictures were quite nice.

I love Pride and Prejudice, but I've never heard of this version before. I might read it, just to satisfy my rapidly growing morbid curiosity. I think that it's genius to use it for reluctant readers, as the zombie aspect is definitely an attention-getter!

What is this fascination with Zombies and Vampires. Am I missing something.

Pride and PREJUDICE AND Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

I've only just begun to read tis book but so far I am enjoying it.
It has the classic Jane Austen but relieves the familiar with a "living dead" twist.
