The Bully in Me

Post by lrico »

First off, let me say that bullying is sadly very much a part of public schools. Do I try to correct it as a teacher? Absolutely. But I don't see everything. Our school has made it our mission to find positive books on bullying. Something in which they can read about other's plights as well as dealing with the issue. This also helps us open the doors to discussion. So far, we've found one that has a positive message as well as targets an older student population (high school). It's called the Bully in ME by MG Villesca. It has discussion questions, worksheets, and resources on their webpage. The author even wrote me back when I asked about it's research base. Very informative.
I would like to hear what books you've read that may do the same. Please let me know if you've read anything that would target the same audience and has a positive message.

I will start - The Bully in ME by MG Villesca

Well I think that you are right, I am also a teacher and feel that it is part of the teen culture. I found that it is extremely hard to overcome bullying and teaching kids how to deal with it. In our school we have a homeroom and all of the teachers get together and teach the same lessons each week for the first few days of school. we try to help them identify the bullying and what to do. We use the stop bullying now web page because they have videos and other things to share with the kids. I also created my own power point to give the kids a sense of reality. Many of them just do not know what to do. Check out the page and share any thoughts that you have.
