Looking for good erotic poetry!

Post by authorapril »

I am a new author, I write poetry and short stories. A lot of my work is erotica, but I also enjoy reading good romance/erotica poems. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good read for me that I could enjoy?

Hmmm...that's a tough one as what one may consider romantic or erotic can very from person to person. I know the Song of Solomon in the Bible is pretty romantic (and some do consider it a bit erotic as the two lovers in the main part of the song are not married). Omar Khayyam is a personal favorite of mine as it's very lush and sensual. Keats, Wordworth and Coleridge are the Romantic poets (but that is what their genre was closed and some of their works may fit your needs like Kubla Khan by Coleridge). The Brontes have very good romantic (but dark) novels like Jane Eyre. I know that's a bit old fashioned, but it can be very moving! Hafez is another poet that's has some really good sensual poetry and so does Rumi (similar to Hafez). There's one that I've always like by Marlowe about "Come be with me and be my love" which I think is called the Passionate Shepherd. DH Lawrence is really good as well. Madame Bovary has some excellent imagery on love-both romantic and physical.Modern authors I don't know as much.

I've read some of 'The Pearl' magazine as part of my 'things referenced in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' reading list.. anyway theres some absolute filth in there plus its from the 1890's so you know even the bad stuff will seem well written by modern standards  .
And its all available online of course. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Pearl

I would with all confidence recommend Charles Baudelaire. His poetry is in french but there always is the translated version. He has a magnificent way of relating women to delicate eroticism to nature and finally to his painful past with his mother.
