The Kingdoms Of Hairpetah: The Quest to the Castle of Grislick by Chiedu Obusez is a book in the fantasy genre and would appeal to the readers of fantasy fiction.
The book follows the story of an evil witch-queen trying to destroy the kingdom of Sadehsia. The kingdoms of Azudehsia and Gorrea have fallen to this curse and for years the fear of this curse plagued the people of Sadehsia. Just when everyone thought that the curse was a myth, all the Dukes of Sadehsia fall one by one. The king is victim to a cruel spell that puts him in a state of coma. Now the citizens of Sadehsia fear the worst, since according to the legend, the kingdom is destroyed by a cloud of madness right after the king dies. It is up to the wizards now to avert this disaster and defeat the witches. To aid them in their task, the chief wizard, Kansimah, forms a company of brave heroes who have to go into the evil witch-queen’s domain to retrieve an ancient relic from the first age to revive the king and a scroll that would enable the wizards to defeat the evil queen once and for all. Will this company of brave men succeed in their quest or would they all ultimately succumb to the queen’s evil plans?
The author has created the fantasy world of Hairpetah with care. The initial chapters in the book are devoted to explaining the history of the three realms of this fantasy world and how the situation in the present came about. This part of the book is quite taxing and a bit long winded which makes this part a slow read. However, once the book moves to the present, the pace of the story catches up and the storyline gets quite interesting.
The author has spent quite some time on the description of the cities and events in the story which has paid off well. One of the best aspects of the book is the description of the fight sequences in the book. The fight sequences are action packed and explained in vivid detail which keeps the reader glued to the book. Apart from the fight sequences, the author has dealt with other issues like the plight of the poor in the kingdom where the novelty thrives on their misery, or the question of justice.
The Kingdoms Of Hairpetah is an exciting tale of valor and adventure. However, there are certain portions of the book which could have been cut short. There are certain unsolved questions towards the end of the book which can pave the way for a sequel. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
