I swear by Lonely Planet's Discover series. I like their photographs, layout, recommended eats, suggested itineraries, "city walks/tours" section and "top 25 experiences/highlights" section. My trip to Spain, Iceland, and Paris were a success thanks to them! I'm using them for Japan this year too! :)
I always browse through them all at the bookstores and have used Fodor but I find the layout for Fodor's not as "fun" and "colourful", even if content can be good as well. There are definite overlaps but Lonely Planet is my style and my kind of travel! My go-to!

Roughing It by Mark Twain. Though it has too many descriptions of mining and that sort of thing, I loved the stories he told in the book, he is SO funny!

DK Eyewitness Travel Guide never disappoints - be it for a specific city, island or whole country. They're also quite quick in releasing updated editions. We have never used anything else in our trips.

I love the lonely planet range. Whenever I am going to travel somewhere, I always buy the lonely planet book on that location. It gives great insights into shopping, sights to see, restaurants, etc. I think I've seen so much thanks to these books.
