Book Review: The Future of Us by Jay Asher

Post by lennon_fontaine14 »

It was when I woke in the middle of the night when my inner geekiness told me to read something before sleeping again but, mind me, I never even feel sleepy at all when I picked this book! ‘Twas like a brand of strong coffee that you wouldn’t even blink for a second ‘cos you’re like a robot that’s fully charged! (Over reacting again. Hahaha)

Well, the plot of the story is not new to me at all. But, it is the way the story was told that will capture your mind and heart! The flow of the story was so easy to get a long that you wouldn’t want to put it down even during class hours (happened to me)!

“How can you call it love when it hurt you so badly?”

“It was love because it was worth it.”

The story was all about bestfriends- Emma and Josh who eventually became awkward with each other six months ago because if you know anything about being ‘friendzoned’, you’ll know what I mean. But, because of the AOL CD Josh’s mom gave to Emma for her new computer and because of this new thing that they discover-Facebook, which is not yet invented in their time, they are brought up together again. This time, with a lot of things to realize and to learn.

“I’ve always protected myself when it comes to love. And maybe that’s the problem. By not letting myself get hurt now, it ripples into much bigger pain later.”
When they realize that Facebook shows them their lives fifteen years from now, which by the way Emma didn’t like at all, they notice that every little ripple they make changes what they are and what they do in the future. The problem rises when Emma tries to change every little thing in her future by doing nasty things in the present because she doesn’t like it at all. Josh gets a little mad at her because every ripple she makes changes the lives of everything around her too in the future. And if the future changes, they haven’t notice that things around them and their relationship between the two of them starts to change too. A lot of CHANGES, eh?

“Rejection always hurts, but having it come from my best friend was the worst.”
The story tells us that even the smallest decisions that we did makes up our future lives. We should be careful enough with deciding because they are really important even if you think they aren’t. Anyway, I’m all yours Josh if ever Emma will never reciprocate your love for her. Hahaha! Team JoshXMe all the way, baby!

“One little ripple started today could create a typhoon fifteen years from now.”
The novel I guess, tells us that we shouldn’t worry about our future too much because what makes up our future is what we do with our present lives. God also said that we shouldn’t worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will worry about itself. We should focus about today, how to be productive enough, how to make the most out of it and how to be thankful enough to be given another day to do all the things you aim to do. It’s not like we can repeat everyday according to our own will.

To sum it up, The Future of Us is about teenage love, family matters, self-actualization and an ending that will your face in two because of… smiling? crying? Who knows? Might as well start reading this fantastic book!

Hoping you’ll add this on your to-read and soon to-love-until-eternity LIST! xoxo

I just finished reading this book and although I didn't hate it, I felt like the authors wasted an amazing idea. I felt like the plot was so predictable and I couldn't really relate to any of the characters since at one point or another in the book I got annoyed with almost each character. I've read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and I loved that book but The Future of Us just felt like a waste of time. :?
