This was my first experience with an audio book, and I got it from Audible. Audible offers a neat service known as, "Immersion Reading." This entails purchasing a book from Amazon, and including the audio track with it, but it's bonus is that this service highlights the sentences as the narrator is reading them.

After using Audible, I found it enjoyable and will be keeping my subscription. It was a lengthy listen, and the narrator gave the characters a good boost in personality. The Pros of Audible had been the choice of different reading speeds, a creative narrator, and a wide selection of books. It's competitors can be considered ill-equipped or over the top. In either case, Audible appears to stand in a position all it's own. Most other services are Jurassic and disorganized, while a select few, such as Graphic Audio, trump it by using different voices for each character and sound effects to bring the listener into a new place of being in their minds. It could be considered plain, but that would be incorrect since only a select few have managed to take audio books to a new level. Depending on which book you have purchased determines what kind of narration you receive. Some are just a single person; while others have multiple readers so that men receive a male reader and women a female reader.

A downside to Audible is that it doesn't accurately keep up with what chapter your on, and I wish it would have multiple subscription settings. The one offered allows for two credits a month which is equivalent to two books.

The book I chose to listen to during my observation was “Day Shift” by Charlaine Harris, and since it was a mystery/paranormal I worried that the narrator may drag too much, or read too fast. It was a very manageable read that allowed me the pleasure of doing other tasks while enjoying a book. Since this was a new experience I feared I would be TOO distracted or bored. I was relieved when I found neither to be the case.

Audible produced a useful and productive service that I will be using again. I give Audible 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend Audible to anyone who doesn't have time to sit and hold a book, but still enjoys a good book. Those who prefer to read word for word while holding their own book wouldn't find Audible satisfying, and will probably cancel the service, but I would recommend EVERY reader to at least try to free month subscription, while it's offered, and see if it works for you. There's no harm done to try something new...especially a good book, however it gets read.
