Flirting with Danger In by Ellie Eden is a book in the suspense/thriller genre. It follows the story of Kristi as she tries to find her husband and keep her family safe.
Kristi knows there is something wrong with Michael, her husband, when he refuses to take her with him to Brazil on his photographic assignment. Her doubts are confirmed when Michael does not return on his return flight and goes missing. She decides to go to Rio de Janeiro to find her husband, and against her better judgment is persuaded by her son, Josh, to take him with her. A harsh reality confronts her in Brazil, when she finds out that her husband has been having an affair with a Brazilian teenager, Nara, for a long time, behind her back. The situation gets more complicated when she is attracted to a strong and handsome Italian-Brazilian federal agent, Tony Lamazzo. Crushed by Michael’s betrayal, she toys with the idea of having a one-night affair of her own with Tony. Before she can act on her impulse, her son gets kidnapped during the festival of the Day of the Dead. She cannot go to the police for help and she is not able to trust Tony after she finds out about his powerful and politically corrupt family. It looks like it’s upon her to save her family and escape back to the US. Will she manage it or will Michael’s affair get them all killed?
The story is written from multiple perspectives and the author has kept the writing style simple for the readers to follow. There are plenty of twists and action packed scenes in the story to keep the reader engrossed in the novel. The author has not focused wholly on sunny beaches and festivals, but explored the world of Drug lords and corrupt administrative machinery ruling the streets of Brazil. The story focuses on the hypocrisy of the Brazilian society and little or no value attached to human life, evidenced by how gangsters kill people who cross their paths as easily as if they were swatting a fly. There are some gruesome scenes in the book which will make the reader flinch.
The author’s characterization in the novel is pretty good. There are some scenes in the book where Kristy comes across as stupid as she goes against the advice of well wishers, but in the larger picture her confusion, distrust and desperation make sense in light of the emotional turmoil and helplessness she is feeling. The reader will also sympathize with Nara, the other major female character in this book, because all she wants is a better life for herself and escape the dangerous reality of Rio. At some point this story is about these two women who fight against dangerous drug lords to save themselves and their family. Tony’s character, though likable, is not the typical hero of this story and that is something I really liked about this novel.
This is a story about love and relationships, intertwined with kidnapping, murder and loads of suspense. This novel will appeal to readers of crime thrillers, as well as those who read romantic suspense fiction. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars for its gripping and engaging story.
