Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Post by EskimoPrincess »

America Singer a girl in one of the lowest caste's in this dystopian story, is one of thirty five girls to be selected to compete for the hand of Prince Maxon. But it means trading in her family, and her secret love Aspen, who is in a caste below hers, for a life that she never even wanted for herself. Full of big dresses, fancy meals, and lavish events.

But as she goes through the motions of the Selection, she finds that this life isn't at all what she had expected it to be; she even liked it. She makes friends and settles into her new home, and predicts when she might be sent home, but the more friends she makes and the more she stays there, she finds herself hoping that she never gets eliminated.

Going into this book, I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. The story was predictable, with a very formulaic layout. But the writing of Kiera Cass made it worth reading, and the story captured me before I had a chance to think too far into the future about what was going to happen. So as long as you go into the book knowing that you can't think about it too much (or you'll ruin it for yourself) you'll love this book.

Filled with just about everything I look for in a book, including romance, rivalry, a dystopia, and impending doom, I was seamlessly brought through the story in a way I never have before. Everything was smooth and there were no harsh transitions or incidents that took me out of the story. The romance between a few of the girls and Prince Maxon made it hard to predict whether or not she would end up with him or not. But the more I went through the book, the more I loved the characters. Cass as a true talent for character creation.

In the end, I found myself immediately reaching for the second book. She does leave on somewhat of a cliffhanger, which is both a curse and a sure-fire way for me to pick up your next book, so the ending definitely made me purchase the next one and I believe I even started reading it right away. I think what makes this book so special is that she sticks to the personalities of her characters so well, and the relation to each other causes the great plot she's written. After this series, I'll read anything Cass writes.
