How to Survive When the Bottom Drops Out, by J. T. Sather, is a non-fiction, tongue-in-cheek twist on a self-help book. It may remind the reader of a stand-up comic routine, but it does contain some good advice on economic survival, along with advice on what not to do.
The information presented by the author has been described as semi-autobiographical. He tells about his experiences as he tried to deal with what life had in store for him since he left high school. His life has been very interesting to say the least, with its extreme ups and downs. He was in the construction business doing very well when the economy crashed in 2009, and he’s had several different types of jobs over the years. Through it all, he has learned how to survive, although by what some may consider rather unconventional means.
There is very practical advice in this book for people who are down on their luck, along with some impractical advice. There actually is a lot of good information given by the author who has been in various predicaments over the years so he actually does know what he is talking about. Some of his tips are: how to learn from your mistakes because they will happen, to be confident but not arrogant, to be truthful and to be nice to people. There are also tips on how to find a place to live and how to find work, but the reader should remember to keep an open mind while reading these parts. I liked the way Sather interjected his own interpretation of definitions of various words throughout this book.
At first I wasn’t sure who would benefit from reading this type of advice book, but after thinking about it, there could actually be quite a few people who are trying to survive in today’s difficult economy who may be able to glean something from Sather’s guidance. There could even be help for the very wealthy if they are down on their luck, since the author has been in that position as well. He’s gone from being very wealthy, to looking for a place to stay while he was looking for work. This book isn’t about stock tips, investment tips, or advice about retirement and pension funds. It’s about what real life circumstances can do to you and how to manage when life throws you lemons or worse.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it is well-organized and well-written and does contain some good suggestions that are given with a sense of humor. I’m not sure who I would recommend this book to. It could be helpful to people who are just starting out in adult life, whether they are having problems or not. If they are having set- backs, it’s an amusing read to cheer them up, and does have some guidance that may actually be of help if they keep an open mind. If you are having problems, and you are just looking for a good read that makes you feel better about your life, then this is a good book for you. After reading what Sather has been through, it should make you feel better about your own life, and give you a good chuckle in the process. It may even help a little to turn your life around.
