Slavery Book

Post by guytwo »

Remember BP Chairman's Svanberg's remarks about us "small people?" I know he is Swedish born but it is typical of England's attitude towards everyone.

I'm reading a book about white slavery called White Cargo: The Forgotten History of Britain's Slaves in America by Don Kirkland and Michael Walsh.

Indentured servitude was just a nice way of saying white slaves, in any case American history has been so whitewashed about this subject it's amazing. BP ummm, I mean Britain has never been kind to the America's or it's people; especially the "small people" the aristocrats didn't like; for example, Irish Catholics, the poor, unwanted children and of course convicts not to mention people snatched off the streets of England. The few who truly volunteered to become indentured servants were often never set free when promised, assuming they survived being treated as the slaves they really were. England finally passed laws against forced slavery but the punishment for kidnapping a person and selling them was less than stealing a horse. An amazing book and I recommend it to any history buff.

I don't want a slavery book, I already have one that I recommend as pretty interesting. A lot of history is forgotten and distorted and the book White Cargo helps set the record straight. It's a very interesting book, also sad how we treat each other.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is classic and I think Invisible by Ralph Ellison can also reveal the tragic life of slaves.
