The Organiser by Paul Cummins is a book in the crime thriller genre. It follows the story of Paul Cummins as he takes on the drug lords in his latest assignment.

It’s not the first time that he has lost a partner on an assignment. Paul Cummins knows the dangers of working as an agent for the police on special assignments, but the death of his newest partner sends him over the edge. While Paul rages at his chief for sending fresh recruits on dangerous missions, his chief retaliates that Paul has upset the top authorities and orders Paul to go on a vacation. However, Paul’s enemies are not in a mood to vacation and they try to get rid of him on his break. A college student by the name of Kerri saves the day with superb flying skills. When his chief learns of this ambush, he decides that the only way for Paul to be safe is to solve this problem. He offers Paul and Kerri the assignment of their lives: to take on the drug lords in South America. Will Paul end this game with his enemies once and for all or will he fall prey to the maneuvers of a secret player?

The story is written in first person from Paul’s viewpoint. The author’s writing style is easy to follow and quite engaging, at least till the halfway mark. Once the story crosses the halfway mark, it starts to lose steam. The story opens with a good action packed scene and follows up with a few more, however, the second half of the book is rather dull. It’s a bit tiring to read about the protagonist playing the wait-and-watch game, raising the reader’s anticipation level for nothing. On the upside, the author introduces an uncommon plot point in this story which is different from the usual chase-and-shoot routine that is common in crime thrillers.

Coming to characterization, our protagonist is the usual seasoned special agent but he’s human and makes mistakes. The author has portrayed Paul’s frustration with his destiny since he is not able to save his partners and can’t do anything to change the situation. Kerri’s character is pretty interesting. Her nerves, daring, love for food and disappointment with the other gender is fun to read about. At the same time, her constant pestering for money is a bit annoying at times.

Though the story lost its way in the middle, the climax is not disappointing. The book is worth a try by readers who like crime thrillers revolving around drug cartels. I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
