In “Eden’s Ore: Revelations”, author B. V. Bayly has created a future world where energy is at a premium and warring factions have taken sides to gain control of what little resources remain. The story follows a motley crew of rebels seeking freedom from the tyranny of those who would enslave them.

This story is packed full of action. Right from the start we find Nate trying to save Gabriel after a military operation has gone awry. Nate, we find out, raised Gabriel after his parents died. We also quickly find out that there are three different groups in this future society. Nate is an ordinary human. Gabriel is an ore user. Ore users have ores of different colors embedded in their bodies and the ore gives them powers that humans do not have. Gabriel is a white ore user which is the rarest kind. There are also black ore users and they are pure evil, using humans and other ore users alike as slaves. Nate and Gabriel are fighting for the Church who formerly persecuted ore users but now that they are at war with T.E.R.A. they need the ore users on their side. T.E.R.A. is a big corporation which is trying to take over the world and they want to use the ore users to provide energy to power their cities. Gabriel doesn’t want to be a part of any of it but finds that it’s impossible to just walk away from the conflict when the warring factions are killing innocent people. His battle quickly becomes a mission to transform the users of the black ore and put an end to their tyranny. Gabriel is also determined to have a future with Claire even when it seems impossible.

The author has crafted a complicated story of good vs. evil with this book. I was very drawn to the plight of the ore users who seemed to be living in fear of the Church and T.E.R.A. Some of them have escaped to the dark zones (parts of the country that do not have power) but there they find themselves under the control of the black ore users. There doesn’t seem to be safety anywhere in this futuristic world. Gabriel has been saved from the brink of death and resents the white ore that caused him to be in that position in the first place. Much of the book is about Gabriel coming to terms with his gift/curse of white ore. There is a lot of military type action in the book, as well as superpowers on display. This may be the first in a series, as the ending left open that possibility.

All in all, I enjoyed this story, it was well written with a variety of personalities and fully developed main characters. Even when the characters have different opinions they always come together around there common cause. I do find fascinating the different types of future worlds that today’s authors are creating and this is an intriguing one. An energy crisis could certainly be the cause of a war for control and the premise here seemed plausible. My only real problem with the book was that there seemed to be a little too much introspection on Gabriel’s part and it started to feel a bit redundant by the end. There is also a group called the Horsemen that are mentioned several times but I never really understood where they came from or what their purpose is in the story. If there are future books planned, perhaps the author will explore this further.

If you enjoy action and superhero type characters then I think you would really enjoy this book. I think it would be quite appealing to a younger audience. I’m giving this book 3 out of 4 stars.

Thanks for the review - Just a note. It's actually book two in the series. But each of the books can be read on their own. Cheers
