Mr. Fahrenheit by Shirley Welch is a fast-driven novel that is a mix of suspense and romance. With a name like Mr. Fahrenheit and a plot involving firefighters, you know this has to be a hot novel. This book does not disappoint! The first chapter opens with a steamy love scene and an interesting twist that captures your attention from the beginning.
Shirley Welch is from the Vail area of Colorado. She does a masterful job of making the wilderness and forest fires come alive with vivid descriptions of the area. She has obviously done her research and is familiar with her subject.
The story begins with a firefighter, Crush Farenhold, in a compromising position with a senator's daughter at a wedding. Apparently, there is no love lost between the Senator Jud Henderson and Crush. Crush is in the area to help him promote safe firefighting. The heroine, Kitty Sanders, is a reporter in the area to cover the wedding. At the same time the wedding is happening, a crazy cop killer is on the loose in the White River National Forest in Colorado. He sets a fire to cover his tracks, but the blaze quickly escalates out of control.
Kitty and her cameraman are flown by helicopter to report the wildfire. Crush catches a ride with them in the hopes he can meet up with his firefighting unit. However, after a harrowing helicopter crash, Crush finds he must protect Kitty not only from a blazing forest fire, but a killer who is stalking them through the mountains. The killer wants Kitty for himself and won't let anything get in his way! It is a race to the finish against a massive forest fire and an out of control killer.
Shirley tells an intense story that grabbed me at the beginning and kept me wanting to read more. Her characters are well-developed and make me feel as if I know them. Her knowledge of the intricacies of firefighting and the detailed descriptions of the surrounding geography lend a sense of authenticity to the novel.
Although there were a few minor grammatical mistakes, they did not detract from the overall well-written story. The only aspect of the writing that did not sit well with me was the increasing use of profanity towards the end of the book. That is just my personal opinion. In the situations described in the novel, it is actually realistic for the characters to be using foul language!
This book is an exciting, page-turner that any adult would enjoy reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the intrigue, love interest between the characters and the mystery surrounding the firefighters and Senator Henderson. Everything comes together perfectly at the end. I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend finding a copy of Mr. Fahrenheit now so you don't miss out on a great book!
