Official Review: A Better Part of Heaven by Mike Lee

The title of the book is A Better Part of Heaven (Other Worlds) and it was written by Mike Lee. The book is science fiction and contains a wide arrange of science fiction or supernatural subject matter. The author has a very broad imagination when it comes to writing, which can make for a very interesting read, or a book that is just too busy. What I like most about his style was that he didn’t introduce all of the characters up front, but throughout the book because when an author introduces all of the characters of a book in the beginning a reader can become bored with a book.
In the first half of the book when he was introducing the character Bryan, I got confused about the time frame he was in because he was writing about Bryan in the future and the past. Also, there was confusion on when Bryan was experiencing reality and day dreaming about his life. “Five weeks later the young couple, with Pushy, the robot dog drove to Las Vegas to a wedding chapel, where the young couple, (not the dog) were married in a small private ceremony.” This sentence is not in any way distinguished as a daydream to Bryan and it is several pages later in the book before you realize he hasn’t even had a second date with the “girlfriend” yet, very confusing.
“It was in the early afternoon, there was a light wind. I was sunny and warm.” This should have read “It was in the early afternoon, there was a light wind, and it was sunny and warm.” The improper grammar and incorrect punctuation made the book very difficult to read. There were a great number of incomplete sentences, misspelled words, and just incorrect words used that I spent a great deal of time making corrections to in my head just to read the book. “Meanwhile, Olivia sat talking to the U.N. Reprehensive Aide, when she got up to use the restroom.” The correct word in this sentence is supposed to be “Representative” and there were times when the character’s names were misspelled as well.
Based on the author’s description of the book I was expecting to read about a character’s search for their spiritual destiny in the world, but I didn’t get to this part of the book until I was half way through the book. I also feel he only put zombies in the book because they are a current popular entertainment feature. Although the author has a very great imagination to pull ideas from, I felt like putting everything into one book was too much. Putting all of his ideas and thoughts into one book made the book very busy and in some areas extremely unorganized. Also, after finishing this book the title is very misleading as to what the content of the book portrays.
I give the book a rating of 2 out of 4 because if he would get an editor and possibly narrow down the beginning of the book it could be better. The first half of the book just seemed extremely unorganized to me in addition to all of the errors. The second half of the book while it also contains errors, has potential. If the author could organize the beginning to better support the second half and have the book edited I think it could be good.

Here is a brief overview of what the story is about:
The first half of the book is about a group of people who have been chosen to explore the possibility of life on a new planet named Caldoria after being told by the government that the planet earth is dying because of pollution. Unfortunately, the trip to the new planet does not go smoothly and the group becomes stranded in space. The second half of the book is about the son of one of the initial group of people who went to Caldoria travelling through several worlds in a dream state so he can learn to be a better person by experience different feelings and hardships. He is forced to go through this as punishment after becoming a warrior who kills unremorsefully and will have to pass judgement to determine if he learns anything from the experience.
Individuals who enjoy reading science fiction and about advancement in technology would enjoy reading this book.
