Icon Book Review: Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Rating: 4.5/5

In this jam packed teen LGBTQ novel, Simon, aka Jaques, has fallen for someone he does not even know, aka Blue. Over countless emails, the two have grown to love one another despite not even knowing the other’s real name.

I adore this novel. I laughed, I cried and I stayed up until 2am reading it because I could not put it down! What makes it so brilliant is the characters as each one is so diverse and individual, I felt I knew them in real life when I reached the end.

There is also a huge strain on what it’s really like to be gay. Coming out and bullying are covered hugely, and this really made me rethink what I thought I knew about how people are treated, and what it’s like to be someone who has to say to the world that they are not a conformist.

One thing I also picked up on was the colloquial writing, which may be a problem for some, but as I pursued I found that the language really helped to create a believable and relatable character. This is a great read for YA and LGBTQ bookworms, and is an uplifting tale of friendship, freedom and, above all, love.
