OK, we've got three members at my house now: me, Gali, and Russell. Anyone else want in?

Thank you. That's a below-ground pool out back. And, uh, a cantankerous old man who just went to bed, and uh...

I wish people wouldn't use the word "just" when describing themselves. e.g. I'm just a car salesman. I'm just short.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure...but there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you...As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. -M.W.

The overuse of the word like can get tiresome. Like everything is not like a simile. :shifty:

Whatnot. Absolutely useless, pointless word.

Saying couple when they mean a few. Couple is two. A few is three or more! Jeeze.

Wow. You all make good points. To Russell: I did learn while studying editing that "like" should not be used in some instances.

WRONG: It's like she's high on life today.
RIGHT: It's as if [or you could use "as though"] she's high on life today.

Mel: Very good points. I hate it when people don't think through their word usage.

PashaRu: I usually use the word "such." As in, "I need to go to the office supply store and buy some ink pens and such." I agree with your issue about "whatnot." It sounds slightly crass to me, kind of like saying "basically" all the time. I think it's OK to use "basically" on occasion, but when people make a habit of it, it's irritating.

Sacha: interesting point too. I almost wonder if people who do that are fishing for flattery. "Oh, no, you're more than just a car salesman!" (Or whatever.) That, or they're selling themselves way short. Either way, it's kinda lame.

So you are basically saying, that when I use like and such, that it is basically as if I am using basically a couple different few things and whatnot.
