@Kappy Fantastic review, especially given the shortness of the subject matter, although a subject like that stirs strong emotions in us all, and can only lead to intense opinions and discussions. I am always intrigued by subjects like this, and historical references in general. It sounds like the author did an amazing job bringing light to an important subject, and his personal reasons for doing so are unimportant. Good job, Kappy and congrats to the author!

Thanks, Escapeartist! I love books with substance to them. It's too bad that so many people avoid nonfiction books for no good reason.

You have to enjoy them to stretch your mind I think. I love adventure, but I also love to learn about anything and everything.

Thanks, gali! You might think that these problems are largely behind us, but according to the Dept. of Justice OJP Fact Sheet (Nov 2011), there were about 2,340 domestic violence fatalities in 2007 (1,640 females and 700 males).

Wow, that is appalling, Kappy. Are these facts from the book, or personal research due to interest spawned by the information in the book?

That wasn't in the book; stats like this are readily available on the internet ... http://ojp.gov/newsroom/factsheets/ojpf ... lence.html

Some of those fatalities were wives who ran away. Their husbands followed them and murdered them and then killed themselves. There have been many such murder suicides in Maine this year. Running away is often very very dangerous. It was certainly so in the 19th century, as I note in "voices and groans...."

Of course, I would like to encourage you and people outside this group to read those two inexpensive pieces available on Amazon. One woman noted that to be married was to open yourself up to being murdered. One man went so far as to say you would not know how many wives were murdered until the sea gives up its dead.

And the murders are often vicious.

Yikes! Excellent job on reading and reviewing a book about such a sensitive issue. I learned a lot just from the review, so I'm sure the book is really informative.

Well, wife beating is still an issue, yes; as is husband beating, more rarely. What's no longer an issue is people turning a blind eye. If any of us were to hear someone screaming in the street, we would freakin' dial 911; that's the issue that hasn't stuck around, thankfully. I guess progress happens slowly, but that IS progress, for sure! :-)

Thanks, Tanaya. The book is indeed quite informative. There is no drab filler material.

@kappy,
I agree with @blumel4. I like to read and learn about social change and when paradigm shifts occur.

Definitely, an unpleasant topic, but one that is true and should not be hidden. Thank you for a great, concise review, and I'll be adding this to my to-read list too.
